En marge des matchs de barrage qualificatifs pour l’Euro 2013 espoirs censé se dérouler dans 8 mois en Israël, douze villes réparties à travers toute la France ont protesté contre la tenue de cet événement en participant à la journée de mobilisation nationale à l’appel de la Campagne BDS France.
Ainsi, à Strasbourg, Toulouse, Rennes, Orléans, Lyon, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Perpignan, Villefranche sur Saône, Nîmes, Albi, et Apt, des centaines de militants se sont rassemblés pour sensibiliser leurs concitoyens à la problématique qu’engendre l’organisation d’une compétition sportive internationale en Israël, état qui ne respecte en rien les valeurs éthiques du sport.
Au contraire, Israël viole impunément les résolutions de l’ONU et le droit international depuis plus de soixante ans et applique une politique discriminatoire, pouvant être qualifié juridiquement d’apartheid, à l’égard de toutes les composantes du peuple palestinien. Celle-ci détruit la vie et les carrières de nombreux sportifs palestiniens talentueux et empêche lourdement le développement du sport palestinien.
En se voyant attribuer l’organisation de cet Euro par l’UEFA, Israël bénéficie d’une reconnaissance trompeuse qui en réalité normalise une situation injuste et illégale.
Pour informer le public et suscité sa curiosité, les militants ont fait preuve d’une grande créativité notamment à Lyon où s’est tenu un tournoi de sixte dont les joueurs arboraient des T-shirts « boycott » sur la Place Bellecour, à Bordeaux une démonstration de Foot Freestyle qui a forcé l’admiration de chacun, et à Montpellier une rencontre parodique a opposé l'équipe d’Israël à une équipe de Palestine arbitrée par l'Union Européenne !
L'attention pretée aux panneaux et pancartes symbolisant un carton rouge et aux tracts et fascicules distribués sur le boycott, ainsi que les discussions avec le public et les signatures apportées à la pétition ont révélé l’intérêt grandissant que portent les Français à cette campagne !

Cette journée nationale a été précédée, la veille, par une action menée par des militants BDS durant le match-aller du barrage opposant l’Equipe de France Espoirs à son homologue norvégienne au Stade Océane du Havre :
6 militants se sont introduits sur la pelouse en brandissant une banderole « Don’t play for Apartheid », et en portant t-shirts « Boycott Israel Apartheid, Justice en Palestine » et « Free Palestine », interrompant le match diffusé en direct à la télévision (sur D8) et à la radio (RMC). Une seconde banderole « Boycott Israel Euro 2013 » a été déployée dans les tribunes.
L’objectif, largement atteint, était double :
A travers ces actions relatives au boycott sportif c’est toute la campagne BDS et la lutte contre l’apartheid et l’occupation de la Palestine qui remporte deux succès significatifs qui permettront de poursuivre de manière encore plus déterminée, dans les prochaines semaines et les prochains mois, d’autres actions de protestation.

On the fringe of the qualifying play-offs for the 2013 European Under-21 football championship, scheduled to be held in 8 months’ time in Israel, demonstrations took place in 12 cities around France, in protest at the venue chosen for the event, and in response to the appeal by the BDS French Campaign. In Strasbourg, Toulouse, Rennes, Orleans, Lyons, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Perpignan, Villefranche sur Saone, Nimes, Albi and Apt, hundreds of activists gathered to raise the awareness of their compatriots on the issue of holding an international sporting competition in Israel, a state which in no sense respects the ethical values of sport. On the contrary, it has been violating UN Resolutions and international law for over 60 years, with total impunity, and practising discriminatory policies against every element of Palestinian society, policies which can legally be termed as apartheid. These destroy the lives and careers of numerous talented Palestinian sportsmen and severely block the development of Palestinian sport.
By being awarded the hosting of this event by UEFA, Israel benefits from an official recognition which deceives and serves to normalize an unjust and illegal system.
In order to inform and arouse the curiosity of the public, the activists displayed great creativity, notably in Bordeaux where a demonstration of Freestyle Football was much admired; in Lyons where a six-a-side football tournament took place in the main city square, with the players wearing “boycott” teeshirts; and a parody in Montpellier, where a match was held between the Israel team and the Palestine team, with the European Union as referee!
All the attention given to the placards and posters symbolising a red card and to the tracts and brochures distributed on the boycott, as well as the discussions with the public and the many signatures obtained on the petition, revealed the French people’s growing interest in this campaign!

On the eve of this national day of demonstrations, BDS activists carried out a protest action during the home game between the France Under-21 team and their Norwegian counterparts, at the Ocean Stadium in Le Havre:
6 activists ran onto the pitch, brandishing a “Don’t Play for Apartheid” banner and wearing “Boycott Apartheid Israel” and “Free Palestine” teeshirts, interrupting the match which was being broadcast live on television (D8 channel) and on radio (RMC). A second banner was held aloft in the grandstand with the slogan “Boycott Israel Euro 2013”.
The largely achieved aim of the action was two-fold:
- To get the attention of the players and the French and Norwegian technical staff, as well as that of journalists, the spectators, and football officials;
- To get coverage in the major media about this appeal to boycott the Euro 2013 event.
With these concerted actions relating to the sport boycott, the BDS Campaign and the struggle against apartheid and the occupation of Palestine achieved two significant aims. Further protest actions will be pursued with even more determination in the week and months ahead.
